Title inspired by Sarah’s visit to the Ashmolean Museum which inspired her use of glazing on the pieces she made in response to the objects I gave her.
This is my collection of broken, discarded and lost dolls. Some I’ve bought from Gloucester Green market where I go every Thursday morning. The names on the shelf are members of the market community I’ve got to know.
We are all imperfect humans, that’s what makes us interesting.
On January 4th this year a project was born out of a conversation with friends.
“If you could choose one word to live by instead of making a New Year’s resolution this year what would it be?”
From here I collected many words from friends and acquaintances, mainly women. I decided to aim for 52 as this is my age and there are 52 cards in a card deck- however it has expanded massively and this work is made up 90 responses to the question. Each card was painted in response to the person who gave me the word, each one remains anonymous to the viewer, all you see is their word and age. I can still look at every card and remember who it represents.
This is the second piece of work I made in response to the words I gathered. When I showed this in “For Women IV” at Ronapainting Gallery I listed all the contributors next to the piece as their contributions were the inspiration behind these works.
This piece is based around the words gathered from 78 Women. It is the third piece in the series.
The fourth piece in the series, this one is made up of all the words I collected from 9 men. I gave this the title “Wild Cards/Jokers” as the original piece was intended to be made up of 52 playing cards (representing the women) and 2 jokers (representing the men) however the project expanded way beyond the intended 54 words.
This piece of work is about Sarah and includes many images and objects she kept from her childhood. These images relate to her past, her treasured childhood toys, her many different homes, her trips back and forth to Singapore and her old student ID. I particularly love the spirograph drawings she kept and based this piece of work around them.
Working with clay given to me by Sarah, I wanted to experience her process. The words are linked to my Conversation and Wilderness pieces, Beautiful Discoveries is about the power of friendship.
Found Accidents cabinet, legs and key

Another nod to Christine’s cabinet of curios- this is mine.
Each item holds meaning for me, the metal scottie dog was inherited from Christine, the scissors from my granny, the teeth are mine and probably the most significant object is my Wilderness armband from last year. Some of the objects I’ve chosen to put in here are directly linked to some of the objects Sarah has included in her work.
This piece has been made in direct response to Sarah’s “Blood Ties”. Each panel represents a member of my family or close friend and each object has been carefully chosen with that person in mind. ”Blood Ties” represents family, “Portraits” is a mix of friends and family as my friends are as important to me as family. I’m choosing to keep each panel anonymous.
